For many families, the choice between a traditional attended funeral and a simple direct cremation does not feel quite right either way. A formal service at a crematorium chapel – the cortege, the fixed format, the pressure of it all – is not what everyone wants. But a cremation with no gathering at all does not feel right either.
The Serenity Suite exists for families in that space.
It is a small, calm, private room at Hollowells where family and friends can come together, say goodbye properly, and do it entirely on their own terms – without the formality of a crematorium service and without the cost of a traditional funeral.
Your service. Your way.
There is no set format to follow. No prescribed order of the service. You decide what the occasion looks and feels like.
A favourite song playing as people arrive. Someone standing to speak who knew your loved one well. A poem, a reading, a moment of quiet. Or something looser – people gathering, talking, remembering. The room holds whatever you bring to it.
Your loved one will rest in the room with you throughout the service, before going to the crematorium. If you would like someone to lead the service, we can arrange a minister, priest or celebrant. Or you can lead it yourselves.
After the service
When the service ends, there is no rush to leave. Family and friends are welcome to stay for drinks and light refreshments – time to gather, share stories and spend a little longer together before the day draws to a close.
It is one of the things families tell us they value most. A natural end to the occasion, rather than everyone dispersing on the steps of a crematorium.

Absolutely. The Serenity Suite has a music system and you can play whatever feels right – a favourite song, a piece of music that meant something to your loved one, or something to set the tone as guests arrive. There are no restrictions on what you choose.
After the service at the Serenity Suite, your loved one stays in our care and the direct cremation takes place at the local crematorium on a separate occasion. Their ashes are then returned to you by our team.
Yes. You can arrange the Silver direct cremation and Serenity Suite service in advance as a pre-paid funeral plan with Hollowells. Everything is organised and paid for at today’s prices, so your family does not have to make decisions at an already difficult time. Ask us for more information when you call.
Yes. There is free on-street parking directly outside Hollowells, and the entrance is fully accessible. If you have guests with specific mobility requirements, please let us know and we will make sure everything is in order.
No. Many families choose to lead the service themselves, or invite a family member or friend to speak. If you would prefer a minister, priest or celebrant, we can arrange one for an additional £280. We are happy to discuss what feels right for you.
Yes, children are welcome at the Serenity Suite service. We want the occasion to feel comfortable and personal for everyone who attends. If you have any specific requirements for younger guests, please let us know when you speak to us.
Complimentary teas / coffees and biscuits are included after the service, giving family and friends time to gather and share memories together. If you would like to discuss specific catering arrangements beyond what is included, please ask us and we will do our best to help.
